Overview
Te Matapihi, Wellington's Central Library, underwent a landmark $217.6 million redevelopment centred on seismic strengthening, sustainable redesign, and future-proofed functionality. Located at 65 Victoria Street in Wellington Central, the building is one of the city's most heavily used civic spaces. MacDonald Industries worked alongside LT McGuinness and Wellington City Council to deliver high-performance hardware solutions that meet the demands of a modern, high-traffic public facility.

Brief
As a cornerstone of Wellington's civic architecture, Te Matapihi required a design that balanced ecological sustainability with extreme durability. The brief called for fixtures capable of withstanding heavy daily use while remaining vandal-resistant, infrastructure that would continue to perform within a seismically strengthened shell, and a flushing system adaptable to a wide range of water pressures across the multi-level facility.

The Solution
To meet these requirements, MacDonald Industries specified the Solo Dual Flush system throughout the building. The selection met the technical specifications for durability and operational consistency in a public setting where reliability is critical.

Solo Dual Flush is built for exactly this kind of environment — its robust construction is engineered for high-traffic public buildings where longevity is a priority, and it delivers consistent performance across varying water pressures so operation stays reliable throughout the entire building. The system also aligns with the project's goal of an ecologically sustainable, low-maintenance design, supporting reduced water use without compromising day-to-day performance.

"The client wanted a solution that is resilient and vandal-resistant as well as a flushing system that would work with a wide range of water pressures. The Solo Flush system met all specification requirements and provided an excellent solution."
